The number of bison estimated to live in North America before the mass killings range from about 30 million to as many as 60 million.
By the early 1880s, the population had plummeted to just a few thousand. Some sources state that over 40 million bison were killed in the 50-year period between the 1830s and 1880s.
The most intensive period of killing occurred between 1871 and 1883, during which most herds were wiped out.
By the 1890s, only a few hundred wild bison remained in the United States.
What sort of human beings could slaughter an entire species like that for sport - leaving the dead animals to rot - not bothering to even harvest the meat?

I recently wrote a post about the genocide of millions of Native Americans perpetrated by early American colonists (the illegal immigrants who actually did invade this land).
A MAGA follower immediately countered that the Native Americans were decimated by illnesses like the flu, not by the colonists.
I pointed out that the colonists caught those infectious diseases just as frequently as the Native Americans. The difference was the poverty in which indigenous people lived after their lands and food sources were stolen.
The deliberate killing of millions of buffalo was a key part of the genocide.
